EPISODE OVERVIEW
When we examine Elimelech’s decision to leave the covenant country of Israel and settle in the cursed country of Moab, we see that he was motivated by fear. Famine had risen in the land, and he was driven by what he saw in the natural rather than what was possible with God.
Secondly, he tried to run away. When we attempt to flee from our problems, we usually end up with the same thoughts, attitudes and baggage we had before, just in a different place.
Finally, Elimelech had the wrong master. His name literally means, “God is my King,” but, ironically, he betrayed his identity by setting himself up as his own lord and master.
After Elimelech and his two sons died, his widow, Naomi, decided to return to her home country because she heard that the Lord had blessed his people in Judah. She urged her two daughters-in-law to return to their families, but Ruth insisted on going with her. This life-altering decision impacted Ruth’s destiny, bringing her into the Kingdom of God and even giving her a place in the lineage of Jesus.
It doesn’t matter where you’ve been—you can come to God. Serving him is the greatest thing you’ll ever do in your life.
